Japanese Surrendered Sword, Signed Hyakuren Heianjo Masatsugu saku, of a Royal Navy D.Day Landing Craft Driver & Gun Operator, & Later, A West Yorkshire Regt. Burma Campaign Infantryman War Hero

A Royal Naval able seaman who operated a landing craft on the D.Day landings, who was demobbed from the Royal Navy in 1944, then re-enlisted in the Army in the West Yorkshire Regiment and fought the Japanese in Burma.

A very good signed gendaito by a v.good maker in super condition overall. Fine traditional pre war mounts all in good condition.

Complete with a copy of the official army retention certificate issued to the owner/soldier of the West Yorkshire Regt officially granting permission to keep the sword. The soldier gained two Japanese swords as souvenirs, an NCO's which we bought from the family, and sold almost 20 years ago, and this his best officer's sword, that he acquired in Burma, and we have just acquired . He had an amazing war career, in the Royal Navy as one of the unsung heroes of WW2, during the D.Day landings . He was first a Leading Able Seaman in charge of Landing Craft LCA 1010 as driver and gun, and deposited our men, during numerous landings, on both Gold Beach and Juno Beach on D.DAY incidentally his birthday was also the 6th June. His LCA was part of the flotilla of HMS Empire Arquebuss. After D.DAY he was released from the Navy, but, decided for him it was not to be the easy and obvious, 'civilian' option, he chose to volunteer yet again to continue the fight, and he joined the Army, the West Yorkshire Regiment, The Prince Of Wales Own. With the West Yorks he served Burma. Of all the British regiments which served in Burma, none surely can equal the record of the West Yorkshires. Their fifteen Battle Honours are only exceeded by the nineteen of the 10th Gurkha Rifles, and their Battle Honour “Burma 1942-45”, the dates covering all four years of the War, is shared only with the Royal Berkshires, 7th Gurkhas and 10th Gurkhas. The NCO's sword that we sold almost 20 years ago, was still wrapped in his British Army, Burmese Hospital bed sheet marked, F, Hospital D.

His best sword, this Katana is in very good original untouched condition with much original paint remaining, usual leather over scabbard now quite worn and split protecting the original painted steel scabbard.

The sword has a superb. Lace with fine hamon, and areas of light surface finger printing.
